Three good reasons to keep next weekend open
|
|
Note from Derek
One correction before you plan: the Downtown Stuart Craft Festival moved from October 3-4 to October 10-11. It now joins a free Port St. Lucie garden market and a free Vero art day. Here is my short list for the week ahead.

Choose the outing before building the route
Choose Stuart crafts or the Port St. Lucie plant market for browsing; choose the free Vero museum day for indoor family time. Give one a proper morning. Friday has an art reception, and the compact calendar adds six options if none of those fits.

This Weekend Across the Coast
Crafts, plants and a free art day
27th Annual Downtown Stuart Craft Festival: Saturday and Sunday, October 10-11, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; free, 26 SW Osceola Street. Choose this for handmade work from local and visiting artisans. Two days give you a Sunday alternative if Saturday is full. Share the organizer's corrected dates.
Botanical Bazaar & Artisan Market: Saturday, October 10, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; free, 2410 SE Westmoreland Boulevard. Plant vendors, artisans, food trucks and live music make this the choice for garden-minded shoppers. Vendor purchases are extra; free admission does not mean a free shopping trip.
Vero Beach Museum of Art Second Saturday: Saturday, October 10, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; free, 3001 Riverside Park Drive. Color Commotion adds free drop-in family art from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Museum time and a hands-on activity make this the strongest budget family choice; no program registration required.

Worth the Drive
An evening for art, a daytime stop for science
Society of Animal Artists exhibition reception at the Elliott Museum: Friday, October 9, 5:30-7:30 p.m., 825 NE Ocean Boulevard, Stuart; suggested $10 donation at the door. Choose this adult evening for the awards presentation and a chance to meet some artists. A cash bar and small bites are available.
FAU Harbor Branch Ocean Discovery Visitors Center: Wednesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., 5600 US 1 North, Fort Pierce; $5 donation encouraged. Research exhibits and aquaria cover marine science and conservation. Choose it for curious children or adults who prefer science to shopping. Boat and campus tours are separate.

One Local Signal to Know Now
The free family art window ends at 1
Color Commotion connects a docent-led mini tour with a studio project on October 10. The family program ends at 1 p.m.; the museum closes at 4:30, with last admission at 4:15. Arrive after 1 p.m. and you miss the family activity. Check for program changes before leaving.

Three details to put on the calendar
- Community Conversations: Tuesday, October 6, 6 p.m., at the Indian River State College Pruitt Campus Veterans Center Auditorium, 500 NW California Boulevard, Port St. Lucie. The free city session covers the budget and upcoming ballot initiatives, with questions from residents.
- Children's Museum of the Treasure Coast: regular visits end at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 10 for evening-event setup. The candy stroll later that day is a separate visit and does not include exhibit play.
- Pelican Island presentation: Saturday, October 10, 1 p.m., in Sebastian, before the afternoon nature-art reception. No RSVP needed; admission is not stated. The art show runs October 10-17.

Derek's One Thing
My pick: make something, then look at art
I would choose the free Vero museum day for a family that wants one clear plan. The October 10 studio program gives children something to do with the art, rather than asking them only to look quietly. It also keeps admission costs predictable: both the museum and program are free. The caveat is timing. Aim for the morning, because the activity finishes at 1 p.m.; a late arrival changes the outing. For adults going without children, the same free-admission day works as a straightforward gallery visit. No extra stop is needed to make it worthwhile.

Featured Family Guide
Our own directory. Keep an indoor alternative in mind before committing to a full morning outdoors. This Treasure Coast guide groups play spaces by city, with toddler-friendly and play-type tags, list and map views, and venue-detail links. That helps you compare a nearby option instead of starting another search with tired children in the car. Some entries flag tickets or reservations. Once you choose a place, confirm its current hours, admission, age fit and booking requirements directly. The guide helps you find the venue; it is not an admission pass.

Practical Planning Tip
Keep the market shuttle cutoff separate
The Fort Pierce market closes at 1 p.m., but its advertised free shuttle runs 8 a.m.-noon. Plan your return before noon if you depend on it. Check organizer notices before travelling.

Community Note
Run a local business? We're preparing a small sponsorship pilot for On The Treasure Coast: $149 a month for a clearly marked placement in four designated weekly regional issues. There will be two slots, reserved for different business categories. Each placement can include your business name, up to 80 words and one link. We'll confirm dates, copy and available reporting before any payment. See the proposed pilot and ask for details.
