A few more choices for October 9-11
|

Note from Derek
A few more weekend choices: the county swap meet returns Saturday at 7 a.m. I've added a quieter museum session and an aquarium tour to the weekend choices. Business owners can ask about the regional sponsorship pilot above.

Leave room for the outing you want
Friday works for a family movie outdoors. Saturday has early browsing and an afternoon science tour. Sunday morning has a museum session designed for children with sensory considerations. Choose the one that suits your household; the calendar below keeps the other possibilities short.

This Weekend Across the Coast
A movie, a treasure hunt and nature art
Fall Fest & Movie Night: Friday, October 9, 5:30-9:30 p.m.; free, Langford Park, 2369 NE Dixie Highway, Jensen Beach. Games and costume contests come before Coco at 8. This is my family evening pick if everyone can manage a later night. Bring chairs or a blanket; food purchases are extra.
St. Lucie County Community Swap Meet: Saturday, October 10, 7 a.m.-2 p.m.; free entry, John B. Parks Sports Complex, 1302 Virginia Avenue, Fort Pierce. The seasonal return brings new and used goods, including clothes and sports equipment. Choose this for browsing with a small shopping budget. Weather can change the schedule.
Indian River Bird & Nature Art Show: Saturday, October 10: presentation at 1 p.m., artists' reception 2-4 p.m.; second-floor gallery, 1235 Main Street, Sebastian. The juried show is my pick for readers interested in wildlife art. No RSVP needed; admission fee not stated. The gallery closes Sunday, then opens weekdays 10 a.m.-4 p.m. through October 16.

Worth the Drive
Two museum visits for different ages
Children's Museum Sensory Friendly Day: Sunday, October 11, 9:30-11 a.m., 1707 NE Indian River Drive, Jensen Beach; $1 admission. For children with disabilities or sensory considerations and their families: softer lighting and reduced sound stimulation. No registration currently required. Entry pauses at 75 guests, so a space is not guaranteed.
St. Lucie County Aquarium Behind-the-Scenes Tour: Saturday, October 10, 2-2:30 p.m., 420 Seaway Drive, Fort Pierce. Staff explain how the aquarium's living ecosystems are maintained. Best for ages 10 and older; included with paid aquarium admission: adults $5, seniors 55+ and children 4-17 $4, under 4 free. Choose it for a curious older child.

One Local Signal to Know Now
Check the shoreline before setting out
Martin County's king-tide advisory lists September 24-October 15 as a higher-tide period, with increased flooding risk in low-lying coastal areas. Before choosing waterfront parking or a shoreline route, check local conditions. The advisory describes a risk; it does not establish that your destination is flooded or closed.

New & Notable
Three notes before you leave
- National Wildlife Refuge Week runs October 10-17. Federal refuge lands that normally charge entry offer free admission October 11. Separately booked guided activities can still cost money.
- Children's Museum regular visits end at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 10. The Trick or Treat Stroll runs 4-6 p.m.; $3 for every adult and child age 1+, with no exhibit play.
- Botanical Bazaar & Artisan Market has been canceled due to inclement weather. The city says a new date will be announced. Remove it from Saturday's plans and check the city page for the rescheduled date.

Derek's One Thing
My pick: let an older child see the machinery
I would choose the aquarium laboratory tour for a child of ten or older who keeps asking how things work. Half an hour with the filtration, lighting and feeding systems gives the visit a clear focus. It is included with admission, so there is no separate tour ticket to budget for. You can arrive before the 2 p.m. start and look at the exhibits first. The age guidance matters: this is the more technical choice. For a younger child with sensory considerations, I would look at Sunday's museum session instead.

Featured Family Guide
Our own directory. Use this Treasure Coast guide when you need an indoor alternative nearby, especially if the outdoor plan changes after you have already chosen a town. City groupings, toddler-friendly and play-type tags, and list or map views help you narrow the search. Venue-detail links give you somewhere to check next. Some entries flag tickets or reservations. Confirm current hours, admission and age fit directly with the venue before leaving. The directory helps you choose a place; admission and bookings are handled by each venue.

Practical Planning Tip
Allow for the shuttle ending early
The Fort Pierce market runs until 1 p.m., but its advertised free Avenue A garage shuttle stops at noon. Plan your return before noon if you rely on the shuttle.
