Note from Derek
Before that familiar library trip: Lewis Branch youth and teen programs are paused through November 7. Check the calendar first. For next weekend, I've picked a park outing, an indoor game afternoon and a festival with a Friday option.

Pick the size of your Saturday
The park festival can take an afternoon and evening; the game session has a two-hour window. Pick what your household can comfortably manage. The galleries below make an indoor alternative. One anchor is enough.

This Weekend Across the Coast
A park day, festival music or tabletop games
FireFest: Saturday, October 17, 1-9 p.m., 16450 SE Federal Highway, Hobe Sound. Choose this for live burn demonstrations and ranger-led activities. Event entry is $6 per vehicle with 2-8 passengers. Optional swamp-buggy rides cost $25 afternoon or $30 evening; budget separately.
Vero Beach Oktoberfest: October 16-18 at Indian River County Fairgrounds, 7955 58th Avenue. Friday 3-10 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m.-10 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m.-7 p.m. My adult evening pick for music and food. Entry is $8 per person per day at the gates; under 13 free. Free parking; purchases inside cost extra.
Game Masters Guild: Saturday, October 17, 2:30-4:30 p.m., Minsky Gym, 750 SW Darwin Boulevard, Port St. Lucie; $5, ages 8-15. A manageable indoor choice for a child who likes strategy. Beginners get staff support; materials provided. Preregistration is encouraged; drop-ins depend on space. Confirm space with Parks & Recreation at 772-344-4142 before going.

Worth the Drive
Art indoors, pumpkins outdoors
James Prosek: At Work: At Vero Beach Museum of Art, 3001 Riverside Park Drive, through October 25. Choose the nature-focused paintings and sculpture for a quieter afternoon. Saturday 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; Sunday 1-4 p.m. Adults $12; ages 17 and under free. This is ordinary gallery admission.
Hobe Sound Farms pumpkin patch: At 1425 SE Bridge Road, Hobe Sound. Patch hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m., extended to 6 p.m. Friday-Sunday. Free entry and parking; pumpkins and paid activities cost extra, with activity fees listed at $5-$20 per person. Choose this for a longer farm outing.

One Local Signal to Know Now
A program pause, not a branch closure
The county library calendar says Lewis Branch youth and teen programs are suspended through November 7 and resume November 10 because the branch is an election site. It does not say the whole library is closed. Some individual listings remain during the pause, so use the banner and check your intended session. Browse other branches for a replacement.

Derek's One Thing
My pick: give the park one afternoon
I would choose FireFest for a family with a child curious about how the outdoors works. The advertised burn demonstrations give you something concrete to watch and ask about. I would build the outing around that, then leave room for whatever everyone still has energy for. You do not have to stay until nine. The optional rides can change the budget considerably, so decide about those before going. For a child who prefers a shorter indoor session, I would choose the game afternoon instead. Different households need different Saturdays.

Featured Family Guide
Our own directory. Keep an indoor alternative near your chosen outing, especially with children of different ages. Start by city, then open individual listings for play cafes, playgrounds and activity centers. Read the venue details and follow its operator links to check current sessions, admission and booking rules before going. A quieter play cafe may suit a younger child; a larger activity center may fit an older one. The directory helps narrow the choices. It does not reserve admission or replace the venue's current schedule.

Practical Planning Tip
Separate admission from the extras
For FireFest, start with the $6 vehicle entry, then add any separately priced swamp-buggy rides. At Vero Oktoberfest, the $8 admission is per person, per day; a child's optional Kids Zone bracelet is another $10, cash only. Food and drinks are extra. Decide which extras matter before leaving, and check availability before paying for a ride.

Community Note
Pass the program-pause note to whoever makes your family's library plans. A small calendar change can save an unnecessary drive.
