Science, art and a Friday night out
|

Note from Derek
Your Sunday newsletter arrives a day late. Here are the choices for October 23-25. First, save the new address: the Indian River Lagoon Science Festival has moved to Museum Pointe Park because of road construction. Early voting is also underway; the local note below gives one new place to consider.

Choose the outing before filling the day
Science activities suit a curious child; the gallery is the indoor choice. For an adults’ evening, choose Friday’s bluegrass. Start with the one that fits, then leave the rest optional.

This Weekend Across the Coast
Three plans worth setting aside time for
Indian River Lagoon Science Festival: Saturday, October 24, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.; free. Head to 414 Seaway Drive, Fort Pierce, for hands-on science and wildlife learning. The city’s event notice also confirms free admission to the St. Lucie County Aquarium and History Center that day. Parking is advertised at Causeway Cove Marina, across the street.
James Prosek: At Work: This is the exhibition’s final weekend, closing October 25 at Vero Beach Museum of Art, 3001 Riverside Park Drive. Nature-focused paintings and sculpture make this my indoor pick. Saturday 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; Sunday 1-4 p.m. Adults $12; ages 17 and under free.
Hobe Sound Farms pumpkin patch: At 1425 SE Bridge Road, Hobe Sound. For October 23-25, the patch opens at 9 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m.; the season continues through November 1. Entry and parking are free; pumpkins and paid activities cost extra. A continuing option if you still need a pumpkin outing. Paid activities are listed at $5-$20 per person.

Worth the Drive
Two ways to spend Friday evening
Uproot Hootenanny at The Loop: October 23, 5:30-8:30 p.m., Riverside Theatre, 3250 Riverside Park Drive, Vero Beach. Folk and bluegrass outdoors, with free general concert admission. My choice for an easy music evening. Food and drinks cost extra; purchases are cashless.
Sebastian costume contest and movie night: October 23 at Riverview Park, 600 U.S. Highway 1. The costume event starts at 5:30 p.m.; the police movie night showing Hocus Pocus 2 starts at 7:15. Both are free. Choose this if dressing up is already the point of your family’s evening.

One Local Signal to Know Now
A new early-voting option in Lakewood Park
Early voting is underway today, October 19. The St. Lucie Supervisor of Elections notice identifies Lakewood Park Branch Library, 7605 Santa Barbara Drive, Fort Pierce, as its newest site. The notice lists October 19-31, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Check it before choosing a location. Early-voting sites are separate from Election Day precinct assignments.

New & Notable
Three details that change the plan
- Museum visitor information lists the sculpture parks and cafe as closed during campus improvements. Plan for the galleries.
- The Loop takes cashless payments. Bring a card if you plan to buy food or drinks.
- Indian River County’s election calendar lists a mail-ballot request deadline of Thursday, October 22, at 5 p.m. This is the request deadline, separate from returning a ballot.

Derek's One Thing
My pick: let the science day be enough
I would choose the lagoon science festival for a family with a child who keeps asking how things work. Hands-on activities give that curiosity somewhere to go, and free entry makes a short visit reasonable. I would pick a few exhibits rather than try to finish everything. The neighboring museums add choices without another drive, but you do not need to do all three. Save the new address now; an old listing could send you to the wrong park. Bring your questions and let the child’s interest set the pace.

Featured Family Guide
Our own directory. A long outdoor outing can stop fitting the family before the day is over. Browse by city to find an indoor playground, play cafe or activity center near your chosen plan. Open the individual listings to compare toddler suitability and reservation notes, then follow the operator links for current sessions, admission and booking rules. Pick the backup before leaving home so you have somewhere specific to check. The directory helps you narrow the options; it does not hold a place or guarantee entry.

Practical Planning Tip
Put the current address in your map
For the science festival, save 414 Seaway Drive rather than an address from an older issue or calendar. The venue has changed. Recheck the event page before driving.
