Pumpkins, gallery night & racing dachshunds

Note from Derek

A small October detail worth catching: the Downtown Fort Pierce Farmers Market runs until 1 p.m. this Saturday, but its advertised shuttle still stops at noon. That extra hour is useful if your morning starts slowly; just plan your return to the car. October’s first weekend has plenty going for it—here’s where I’d spend the time.

Tomorrow: an easy downtown hour

Jammin’ Jensen is tomorrow, Thursday, October 1, 6–10 p.m. in downtown Jensen Beach, with artists, vendors and music, and no admission charge. This is the easy after-work choice: give yourself an hour to browse, then settle on dinner. You don’t need to turn it into a four-hour commitment.

This Weekend Across the Coast

Three plans, three different moods

Fall on the Farm at Hobe Sound Farms: The pumpkin patch opens Saturday, October 3; weekend patch hours are 9 a.m.–6 p.m. Entry and parking are free; pumpkins and many activities cost extra. Best for families who want a proper farm outing rather than a quick pumpkin purchase. Budget for the extras before arriving.

First Friday Gallery Stroll: Friday, October 2, 5–8 p.m., in Vero’s downtown Arts District. Gallery 14 opens its 19th season with new prints and paintings. This is the strongest low-cost date-night pick: free browsing, real local art, and an evening you can shape around dinner.

Port St. Lucie Oktoberfest: Saturday, October 3, 5–9 p.m., at the MIDFLORIDA Event Center. Free admission brings German music, dancing and the wiener dog race, plus a kids’ zone; food and drinks are extra. Choose this for a lively evening with mixed ages. The dogs are reason enough to go.

Worth the Drive

Two indoor detours with substance

James Prosek: At Work at the Vero Beach Museum of Art turns birds, fish and field studies into an indoor outing worth slowing down for. The show closes October 25. Saturday hours: 10 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; Sunday: 1–4 p.m. Adults $12; ages 17 and under free. This is the weather-flexible pick for curious older kids and adults.

McLarty Treasure Museum, north of Vero, puts the 1715 fleet story on the survivors’ camp site for $2 admission. Call 772-589-2147 before a long drive; volunteer staffing makes that worthwhile. Our Treasure Hunting on Florida’s Treasure Coast: Best Beaches, Wreck Dives, Flea Markets, and Museums helps you choose a history stop when an ocean outing looks uncertain.

One Local Signal to Know Now

Saturday gets an extra market hour

The Downtown Fort Pierce Farmers Market switches to its October–May schedule this Saturday, October 3: 8 a.m.–1 p.m. My practical take: shop for groceries first, bring a cooler, then make breakfast the reward. It’s a weekend outing that also gets something useful done. Free garage parking is advertised; the shuttle runs 8 a.m.–noon.

New & Notable

One deadline, one date, one useful update

  • Before Friday ends: the Hobe Sound Farms Pumpkin Package is advertised at $18 through October 2: hayride, hay-bale maze, small pumpkin and slingshot. Check the terms before buying.
  • Save next Thursday: River Nights returns October 8, 5:30–8:30 p.m., at The Port District in Port St. Lucie. Free music; food-truck purchases extra.
  • Fresh planning help: Pumpkin Patches Near the Treasure Coast was verified September 29 and separates confirmed 2026 openings from older leads. Useful before committing to a pumpkin drive.

Derek’s One Thing

Take the gallery night

My pick is Friday’s First Friday Gallery Stroll. For couples or friends who want an actual evening together, this wins on the basics: no admission charge, a three-hour window, and small stops that keep the conversation moving. I’d choose two galleries, leave time for dinner, and skip any attempt to see every wall. Gallery 14 gives you a fresh starting point with its new season. One caveat: the galleries provide indoor breaks, but walking between them still depends on the weather. Comfortable shoes matter more than a dressy plan.

Indoor Play Atlas

An in-house editorial promotion from On The Treasure Coast.

Before heading to a pumpkin patch or outdoor festival, choose one nearby indoor backup that actually fits your children. This guide groups Treasure Coast play spaces by city, with toddler-friendly options, play cafés and bigger activity centers, so you can narrow the choice without opening ten tabs in the parking lot. Use it to compare the type of play and reservation notes, then confirm your visit day’s hours and admission directly with your chosen venue. A good Plan B keeps a weather change from taking over the whole day.

Practical Planning Tip

Check out a cheaper indoor afternoon

Indian River County residents with a library card in good standing can use the Library Museum Pass Program to borrow a pass for one free exhibition visit for two adults. Passes are limited, collected in person, and cannot be reserved—check today or tomorrow. That makes the indoor art plan easier on the budget. The museum’s café and sculpture parks are currently closed during campus improvements.

Community Note

The Keiser University Port St. Lucie Fall Festival benefits its scholarship fund. A free family day with a local education benefit is a good combination—worth remembering when choosing where to spend Saturday.
