Healthcare, skilled trades, accounting and education are useful places to start a Port St. Lucie job search. The regional workforce board identifies occupations with recurring openings in these fields, and local hospitals, schools, government agencies and distribution businesses provide specific employers to investigate. That evidence supports a focused search; it does not establish that every employer is hiring today or that one occupation is best for every applicant.
This guide separates three questions: which occupations have projected demand, which organizations employ people locally, and which current vacancies match your qualifications. Those answers come from different sources. Research was checked September 30, 2026. The occupation table below covers Indian River, Martin and St. Lucie counties, while the monthly employment snapshot covers the Port St. Lucie metropolitan area.

Quick list
The question this guide answers
- The regional targeted-occupation list includes registered nurses, electricians, HVAC technicians, accountants, teachers and automotive technicians with recurring projected openings. Its figures cover three counties and are projections, so verify current Port St. Lucie vacancies and required credentials separately.
Occupations worth investigating first
CareerSource Research Coast's linked 2025–2026 Local Targeted Occupations List provides regional projections and 2024 hourly wage estimates. These are selected examples with practical relevance to local applicants, not a ranking of all available careers. Annual openings include replacement needs as well as growth, and an entry wage estimate is not a guaranteed starting offer.
Read a listing's credentials before buying training. A nursing position requires the appropriate license; an electrical or HVAC apprenticeship can have a different entry route from an experienced technician position. Teacher compensation is normally discussed through an annual salary schedule and contract days, so the statistical hourly estimate above should not replace the school district's actual offer. Ask CareerSource for its newest occupation list before using this older linked program-year document to make a training decision.
| Occupation | Projected regional annual openings | Estimated entry hourly wage | Estimated mean hourly wage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Registered nurses | 302 | $34.34 | $41.64 |
| Accountants and auditors | 167 | $24.55 | $41.40 |
| Electricians | 140 | $19.71 | $26.50 |
| HVAC mechanics and installers | 106 | $19.78 | $25.33 |
| Elementary school teachers, excluding special education | 168 | $21.74 | $24.89 |
| Automotive service technicians and mechanics | 182 | $16.60 | $25.51 |
What the current employment snapshot says
The Bureau of Labor Statistics metropolitan page, checked on September 30, reports preliminary August 2026 unemployment of 5.2%, not seasonally adjusted. Total nonfarm employment was about 177,800, up 0.5% from a year earlier. Education and health services employment rose 2.3%; leisure and hospitality rose 3.3%; manufacturing rose 3.7%. Construction and professional and business services declined 2.5% and 2.4%, respectively.
Those figures describe employment across the metropolitan area. They do not count today's Port St. Lucie vacancies or show how many qualified applicants compete for each opening. A growing sector can contain employers freezing recruitment, while a shrinking sector can still advertise replacement jobs. Use the snapshot to understand the market, then use individual employer postings to decide where to apply. Avoid relocating solely because a broad industry has a positive annual percentage.

Use the article for evergreen ideas and the newsletter for what is happening right now.
That combination gives you the best shot at finding something that fits the season, your schedule, and what is actually open or active this week.
Hospitals and education employers
The county Economic Development Council's major-employer directory identifies Cleveland Clinic Martin Health, HCA Florida St. Lucie Hospital and HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital among important healthcare employers. Their facilities are spread across the region; Lawnwood is in Fort Pierce. Search for the actual worksite, shift and department. Healthcare employment includes clinical roles alongside scheduling, facilities, food service and administrative work, with different qualifications for each.
St. Lucie Public Schools human resources and Indian River State College's jobs page are direct starting points for education work. School and college employment extends beyond teaching, but a job-description library does not prove that every described role is open. Look for an active requisition, application deadline, campus or school assignment, and any background-screening or certification requirements. Save the requisition number so similar jobs do not become confused in your application records.

Government, logistics and manufacturing
The EDC directory also lists the City of Port St. Lucie, county government, distribution operations and boat manufacturers. It identifies FedEx in Port St. Lucie and Walmart distribution and Pursuit Boats in Fort Pierce. These locations matter: a regional employer can be a reasonable commute without being a job inside the city. The city's human resources department links to its own recruitment information.
For warehouse and manufacturing work, read physical requirements, shift start times, overtime expectations and whether the position is permanent, seasonal or hired through a staffing company. A headline hourly rate can include a shift differential or depend on a schedule you cannot maintain. Ask how training is paid, when benefits start and whether the advertised workplace is the place where you will actually report. An employer's size provides context, but a dated headcount is not evidence of current recruitment.
Get help before committing to paid training
CareerSource's job-seeker services include search assistance, skills assessments, workshops and appointments at no cost. Its training information describes apprenticeships, on-the-job training and approved classroom programs. Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act support depends on eligibility, suitability, approved programs and available funding; a course appearing on a list does not automatically entitle a person to payment.
Take three actual job postings to a career appointment and compare their required credentials with your current experience. Ask which training gap prevents you from qualifying and whether a shorter credential or paid apprenticeship addresses it. For a tuition-funded program, request total costs, schedule, completion requirements, licensing eligibility and placement evidence. The useful outcome is a documented route to specific jobs you can apply for, rather than a general promise that a field is growing.
Compare an offer with the commute and household budget
For a job south of the Treasure Coast, calculate workday costs before comparing salaries. A hypothetical $3 hourly increase across 40 hours adds $120 per week before tax. Additional fuel, tolls, parking or childcare can consume part of that difference. The calculation is an illustration, not a claim about a particular employer. Our West Palm Beach commute guide and local transit guide explain options that depend on your worksite and shift.
Build a short application list with separate columns for location, base pay, schedule, credentials and application status. Apply through the employer's official site and retain the posting date and requisition. If an offer arrives, obtain compensation and working arrangements in writing before making housing or training commitments. A role you can keep reliably is usually a stronger starting point than an attractive advertised wage attached to an impractical daily journey.
