A Port St. Lucie–West Palm Beach commute can work, but its practicality depends on the two exact addresses and your shift. Driving gives more departure choices. Palm Tran's PSL Express provides a weekday alternative from Gatlin Boulevard to West Palm Beach with a limited timetable. Neither a broad city-to-city mileage estimate nor a single quiet-day drive establishes the time you will spend commuting every week.
This guide compares the current coach schedule, road planning and the costs that often disappear from a simple fuel calculation. The published transit information was checked September 30, 2026. Test the complete journey at your real work times before using it to choose a home or accept a position.

Quick list
The question this guide answers
- Yes, by road or the weekday PSL Express when its schedule and stops fit the job. Judge the full door-to-workplace journey and return, rather than assuming one travel time applies throughout both cities.
Compare roads with the actual start and finish
Enter your home and workplace into Florida 511, the Florida Department of Transportation's traffic information service. Its mobile-app information describes routes and drive times, including interstate and major-road conditions. Compare I-95 with Florida's Turnpike where those routes fit the addresses. A neighborhood's access to an interchange and the final approach to your workplace can matter as much as the highway portion.
Look at conditions at the time you expect to leave, in both directions and on more than one ordinary workday. Check congestion, crashes, lane closures and construction rather than treating an off-peak estimate as a rush-hour promise. Include school drop-off if it is part of your morning. At the West Palm Beach end, add parking, the walk to the building and any access procedure before clocking in. Record door-to-desk time. Repeating that measurement gives a more honest basis for a housing decision than claiming that every Port St. Lucie resident has the same commute.
The weekday express has two useful morning departures
Palm Tran's PSL Express page lists southbound departures from the Gatlin Boulevard Park & Ride at 6:20 and 6:45 a.m., reaching West Palm Beach's Intermodal Transit Center at 7:25 and 7:50 a.m. The scheduled bus segment is 65 minutes for those trips. Add travel to Gatlin, waiting and transport from the arrival stop to your workplace. These times describe the timetable, not guaranteed traffic performance.
The evening northbound options from the Intermodal Transit Center are 5:15 and 5:50 p.m., with Gatlin arrivals at 6:25 and 6:55 p.m. respectively. The service also has northbound morning trips and southbound evening trips, useful for some reverse commutes. There are four round trips on weekdays and four local downtown West Palm Beach stops. Ask which stop best serves the workplace and its own departure time. A job outside the downtown area may still require a substantial connection after the coach.
Local tip
Use the article for evergreen ideas and the newsletter for what is happening right now.
That combination gives you the best shot at finding something that fits the season, your schedule, and what is actually open or active this week.
Put the schedule beside your shift
For an 8 a.m. start, the 7:50 a.m. scheduled bus-center arrival leaves only ten minutes for the remaining journey. That may be inadequate even if the coach is on time. The earlier departure offers more scheduled margin, but may also create a long wait before work. An evening shift, weekend schedule or unpredictable late finish needs a separate plan because a weekday commuter coach cannot cover every working pattern.
Use Palm Tran's trip planner to check the local leg and its transfer time. The Intermodal Transit Center at 150 Clearwater Drive connects with other transport, while Brightline uses a different station. Rail connections do not create a Port St. Lucie boarding station. If part of your commute extends farther south, compare the entire chain with the train connection guide, including a return that fits the last coach. Separate operators' schedules should not be assumed to wait for a delayed connection.

Calculate a monthly cost for each option
The published express fare is $3 each way, cashless, with Paradise Pass and contactless payment options. A simple 20-workday month with one outward and one return coach ride totals $120 before any additional transport. That is an illustrative calculation, not a monthly pass price. Palm Tran lists a $2 transfer to fixed-route service; include applicable local rides rather than assuming every connection is included in the $3 fare. Discount eligibility and payment rules should be checked directly.
For driving, add fuel, tolls, workplace parking and the additional mileage's effect on maintenance. Use the Turnpike's official toll information and calculator for the actual entry, exit, vehicle and payment method. SunPass and Toll-By-Plate have different costs. A rental car can add its own toll-program charges. Compare costs for the number of days you actually travel, especially if your employer allows hybrid work. Then consider whether spending time as a passenger is useful to you; the coach lists Wi-Fi and charging ports, but the work you can do while riding is personal.
A backup ride has conditions
South Florida Commuter Services offers a Guaranteed Ride Home program for qualifying registered commuters who use transit, carpooling or vanpooling an average of three days per week. The rules allow no more than six rides per participant per year and limit pickup to the registered work or higher-education address. The request page requires registration information to have been current for at least seven days.
Read the eligible circumstances before relying on the program. Unexpected required late work can qualify, but scheduled overtime, personal errands, preplanned appointments, transit failures and bad weather are excluded by the published rules. This is not a daily extension of the final bus. Arrange a practical backup for the situations the program does not cover, and find out how your employer handles an unexpected schedule change. A carpool can also be worth exploring, provided the participants agree on pickup, cost-sharing and what happens when one person stays late.
Test a full week before committing
Choose a typical week and record departure, workplace arrival, evening departure and home arrival. For transit, note the walk, transfer, crowding and whether you can reliably reach the return stop. For driving, record toll choices and parking costs along with travel time. Compare those results with sleep, school, caregiving and the time you want at home. A journey can be technically possible while leaving too little margin for your household.
Bring the findings to a housing or employment decision. A home closer to Gatlin may help the coach journey but still needs a workable local connection. A workplace beside a downtown stop may favor transit more than one farther from the route. Use the ART local bus guide for the first leg and the Port St. Lucie cost guide for the larger household budget. Recalculate if the workplace, shift, service timetable or number of office days changes.
